Kindle for macOS *sucks*. And I can’t get Kindle for iPad installed anymore!

OK, I’m mad!

I know this is not the best way to start an article, but I am furious. Because I cannot install (anymore?) Kindle for iPad on my MacBook M1 (and M2).

It was there before. I’m 101% sure it was. And after a refresh/reinstall of my M1 (don’t ask why I needed it), it’s not there anymore. AppStore (for Mac) does not even show it in the search results, and the only app I can install is Kindle for Mac.

This is bad. This is awful. Because Kindle for Mac sucks! Here’s why:

First, it’s ugly.

It needs a total UI revamp because it looks like Access 95 in its bad days! Its UX is non-existent. It’s not slick, and I constantly wonder, “Where’s this or that.”

Second, it’s outdated.

Compared to Kindle for iPad/iPhone, it lacks significant functionalities, like:

  • Having the “Dashboard” screen, which is extremely handy;
  • Having the ability to share in a nice picture the highlighted quote out of the app;
  • Supporting the quarterly challenges.

Third, its UX sucks (did I already say that?)

Today, the Kindle for Mac takes the user immediately to its “Library” screen, where I can open and read, but I don’t feel like *participating* in the whole “Kindle experience.”

I am furious at an anonymous PM (or a team), which decided, “Let’s screw up our Macbook users and deprive them of the ability to install the iPad app. Maybe that’s how to raise the usage of our shitty MacOS native Kindle reader and finally get these bonuses for app adoption?”

I worked at Microsoft. During the IE era! I know this kind of mindset. And it pisses me off. As it pissed me off back then!

Kindle folks, please make the iPad app available for macOS again. Don’t screw your customers — it’s never a good idea, no matter how juicy bonuses you’ll get short-term, if you do so.
